IV sedation

Stress and anxiety around dental procedures are very common. At Wisdom Dental, we want to do everything we can to make that process easier, which is why we offer IV sedation. It’s a safe and reassuring form of sedation that relaxes you to the point of not being aware of the procedure, but still being conscious.

If you choose to have IV sedation, we will provide you with further information before the day of the procedure on our safety processes and post-procedure care to make sure you’re fully comfortable with the process.

What to expect

During the procedure, you will be conscious but extremely relaxed. Many patients come out amazed at how quick the procedure felt, sometimes not even believing we had enough time to complete the treatment.

After the procedure, you’ll be a bit groggy and will need to have someone drive you home and stay with you for a few hours. We will provide you with full aftercare instructions before the day of your procedure. You can expect to not remember the treatment as IV sedation usually results in temporary amnesia.

IV sedation is a good choice for:

  • anyone with anxiety about dental procedures
  • more difficult procedures
  • those with high sensitivity to pain

FAQs

Will my procedure hurt?

Once sedated, you will still be awake but not aware of what’s happening. However, IV does stand for intravenous, which means we insert a tiny tube into a vein in your arm so we can administer the sedative. It can be a little painful when we insert the IV so if this is something that worries you, be sure to let us know at the consultation so we can make the process as easy and as comfortable as possible.

At your consultation, we will also provide you with a prescription and instructions for pain management following your procedure.

Do I have to have IV sedation?

Sedation is completely optional. However, most patients prefer it as it makes unpleasant procedures far more manageable. Whether you opt for sedation or not we will inject a local anaesthetic to numb the area we're working on.And if you choose not to have sedation, we’ll also numb the area with ointment before injecting the local anaesthetic for an almost pain-free experience.
